MuleSoft for energy and utilities.

Utility data sits in billing, meter, outage and asset systems that rarely talk to each other; MuleSoft gives Salesforce a governed way to reach all of them.

What MuleSoft does for energy & utilities

MuleSoft lets utilities, competitive energy retailers and energy services companies expose their operational systems as reusable APIs. A customer information system provides account, rate and billing data; a meter data management system provides usage; outage management provides restoration status; work and asset management provides service orders and equipment. MuleSoft connects each of these once, then serves the data to Salesforce service consoles, customer portals, field apps and analytics. It also handles the reverse direction, so a move-in request or program enrollment captured in Salesforce reaches the billing system with validation and a clear record of success or failure.

Why it fits

Why energy & utilities is different.

Energy integration is different because much of the core technology is long-lived, heavily customized and tied to regulated processes. Billing engines and outage systems may run on older platforms with batch interfaces, while newer smart meter and distributed energy data arrives in high volumes. MuleSoft adapts through layered APIs: system APIs wrap each legacy platform, process APIs combine them into business actions such as start service or report an outage, and experience APIs shape responses for each channel. That layering lets a utility modernize customer channels without touching billing logic, and later replace a backend system without rewriting every consumer of its data. Operational technology networks stay separate, with only approved data crossing into IT.

Use cases

How energy & utilities teams use MuleSoft.

Start, stop and move service

A move request touches premise lookup, credit checks, deposit rules, meter orders and the billing account. A process API coordinates those steps behind a single call, so the service console, the portal and an AI agent all use the same logic. Failed steps return clear reasons, and representatives see exactly where the request stopped instead of reentering it in the billing system.

Outage status across channels

During storms, customers check outage status by phone, text, web and chat at once. MuleSoft can publish outage events from the outage management system and cache status by premise, so Salesforce channels answer quickly without overloading the operational system while restoration estimates change. Outage reports submitted online flow the other way, grouped by premise, so dispatch sees them alongside calls.

Usage and bill explanations

High bill complaints are easier to resolve with interval usage, weather and rate details on screen. MuleSoft retrieves usage from meter data management on demand rather than copying every reading into Salesforce, then combines it with billing history so a representative or self-service page can explain what changed between billing cycles and whether usage, rates or weather drove the difference.

Program and interconnection intake

Efficiency rebates, demand response enrollment and rooftop solar interconnection each involve eligibility rules, documents and handoffs to engineering. MuleSoft checks eligibility against account and premise data, sends approved applications to work management or the interconnection queue, and returns status to Salesforce so contractors and customers can follow progress without calling the contact center. Program managers get a single history of every application.

Design

The data model decisions.

Integration design in energy starts with identifiers. Customers, accounts, premises, service points and meters each carry their own keys, and a single customer may hold several accounts across premises. Agree early which system owns each identifier and how Salesforce stores cross-references. Next, classify data by sensitivity and freshness: billing and usage can tolerate short caching, outage status needs events, and critical infrastructure details should not leave operational systems at all. Finally, decide which interactions are synchronous calls and which are queued messages, since batch-era billing platforms often cannot answer real-time requests at contact center scale.

Customer information system

Account, rate, billing and payment data exposed through system APIs, with write-backs for service orders and enrollments validated before they reach the billing engine.

Meter data management

Interval and register reads retrieved on demand for bill explanations, program eligibility and usage alerts, without bulk-copying every reading into the CRM.

Outage management and GIS

Outage events, restoration estimates and premise-to-circuit relationships feed customer channels, while detailed network data stays inside the operational environment under utility security controls.

Plan for it

What to get right first.

01

Respect OT and IT boundaries

Grid control and operational technology networks carry strict security expectations, including NERC CIP requirements for many bulk electric system assets. Place MuleSoft runtimes on the IT side, move only approved data across the boundary, and involve security and compliance teams in each new interface design.

02

Plan for storm-level traffic

Customer traffic during a major outage can dwarf normal volumes. Load test outage APIs against realistic peaks, cache status responses, and use asynchronous queues so a surge in portal checks does not slow the outage system that crews and dispatchers depend on.

03

Protect usage data privacy

Interval readings can expose household routines, such as when a home sits empty. Many state commissions set rules on sharing customer energy data with third parties. Limit what each API returns, log access, and confirm consent requirements before exposing usage to partners or program vendors.

FAQ

MuleSoft for energy & utilities: questions.

Will MuleSoft work with a billing platform that predates APIs?

Usually, yes. MuleSoft supports database, file, message queue and web service connections, which covers most legacy customer information systems. The harder work is understanding nightly batch schedules, exception handling, business rules buried in the billing engine and which transactions can safely run in real time. We map those constraints before promising real-time behavior to customer channels.

Does MuleSoft replace our enterprise service bus?

It can, but a replacement is a program of its own. Many utilities run MuleSoft alongside an existing bus at first, building new customer-facing APIs on MuleSoft and migrating older interfaces as they come up for change. That approach avoids a risky cutover of interfaces that billing, outage and field systems rely on every day.

How does MuleSoft help competitive energy retailers?

Retail energy providers exchange enrollment, drop and usage transactions with utilities and market operators in defined electronic formats. MuleSoft can translate those transactions, track their status and surface exceptions in Salesforce, so sales and service teams learn when an enrollment was rejected and why, instead of discovering it when the customer's first bill never appears.

Where do AI agents fit in utility integrations?

Yes, if the APIs were designed with limits. An Agentforce agent can call a process API to check outage status or begin a move request, grounded in the account data it is permitted to see. Sensitive matters such as payment arrangements or disconnection questions should hand off to a person, and every call runs through the same API policies as other channels.
