The Practice

Field Service works when scheduling matches the real job.

Field Service projects succeed or fail on scheduling. If work types, skills, territories and travel rules do not reflect how crews actually work, dispatchers go back to spreadsheets and Outlook calendars within weeks. We start by modeling the real jobs: how long they take, who is qualified to do them, what parts they need and where the technicians are.

What we actually do

We configure work orders, service appointments, skills and territories, the dispatcher console and the Field Service mobile app, and connect them to cases, assets, quotes and inventory. For one packaging-automation manufacturer we replaced manual Outlook scheduling with automated appointment creation, territory assignment, a visual Gantt view and skills-based matching across 37 work types. For a painting and construction company we took crews paperless with Field Service mobile and CPQ estimating, so managers see costs against estimates in real time.

Licensing and scale

Not everyone who appears on a schedule needs a Field Service license. For an industrial-services firm we tracked 75–100 laborers without per-worker Field Service licenses, using a custom Labor Resource object, as part of rescuing a $100K build from a previous partner. Getting the license model right early can matter as much as the configuration.

FAQ

Salesforce Field Service questions.

Do all field workers need a Field Service license?

Not always. For an industrial-services firm we tracked 75–100 laborers without per-worker Field Service licenses by using a custom Labor Resource object. The right license model depends on who needs the mobile app and who only needs to appear on a schedule.

Can Field Service replace Outlook or spreadsheet scheduling?

Yes. A packaging-automation manufacturer replaced manual Outlook scheduling with automated appointment creation, territory assignment, a visual Gantt view and skills-based matching across 37 work types.

Can Field Service work with CPQ quotes and estimates?

Yes. For a painting and construction company, crews log work digitally in the field while managers compare costs against CPQ estimates in real time, with budget alerts.

Can you fix a Field Service build another partner started?

Yes. We rescued a Field Service build a previous partner had delivered for over $100,000 that the client could not use. See Salesforce implementation rescue.
