Industry guide · Salesforce Revenue Cloud / CPQ

Revenue Cloud for retail and consumer goods.

Revenue Cloud fits the wholesale and business-to-business side of consumer goods, pricing retailer and distributor deals, not the checkout lane or the online store.

What Salesforce Revenue Cloud / CPQ does for retail & consumer goods

Revenue Cloud gives consumer goods brands a controlled way to quote and contract with the businesses that resell their products: retail chains, distributors, independent stores and institutional buyers. Sales teams build quotes from the product catalog with customer-specific price lists, case-pack and pallet quantities, promotional allowances and payment terms, and approvals catch deals that fall outside policy. For retailers, the fit is narrower. Revenue Cloud does not price shelf items or run checkout; it helps where a retailer sells to other businesses, such as commercial accounts, installation services, fixtures programs or a wholesale arm.

Why it fits

Why retail & consumer goods is different.

Consumer goods pricing is rarely a single list price. The same item sells at different net prices to a national chain, a regional grocer and a distributor, shaped by volume tiers, off-invoice allowances, slotting fees, co-op funds and freight terms. Revenue Cloud handles the parts of that picture that belong on a quote or contract: customer price agreements, tiered and bundle pricing, and discount approvals tied to margin. Trade promotion spend, deductions and retailer scan data usually live in dedicated trade systems or ERP, and Revenue Cloud should reference those amounts rather than recalculate them. Retail businesses find their fit in business-to-business channels, since consumer pricing and promotions run in commerce and point-of-sale platforms.

Use cases

How retail & consumer goods teams use Salesforce Revenue Cloud / CPQ.

Retailer and distributor price agreements

Seasonal or annual price agreements set net pricing, minimum order quantities and allowances for each account. Revenue Cloud stores those terms as contracted prices, so every later quote and order for that retailer starts from the agreed figures. When a buyer asks to renegotiate, the rep amends the agreement instead of rebuilding it, and the history shows what changed and who approved it.

New item and line reviews

Retail line reviews and new item pitches need a clean offer: item details, case configuration, introductory allowances and landed cost to the retailer. Reps assemble that offer as a quote from the approved catalog, attach the sell sheet, and route unusual launch terms through category and finance approval before the buyer meeting rather than after it, when the terms are already on the table.

Wholesale and foodservice reorders

Distributors, foodservice operators and independent stores often reorder the same assortment with small changes. Revenue Cloud can generate quotes and orders from those accounts' contracted prices, apply case and pallet quantity breaks, and pass confirmed orders to ERP for fulfillment. A wholesale storefront built on Experience Cloud or a commerce platform can reuse the same pricing rules, keeping self-service reorders consistent with rep-created quotes.

Retail commercial and services sales

Retailers that sell to businesses, through commercial account programs, bulk gift card orders, installation services, protection plans or large orders for schools and offices, need quotes with approvals and contracts. Revenue Cloud gives those teams configurable bundles and discount controls kept apart from store pricing, so a large commercial order gets a documented, approved price instead of a manager override at the register.

Design

The data model decisions.

Start by settling which system holds the authoritative net price. Most brands keep list prices and cost in ERP and sync them into Revenue Cloud price books, while customer-specific agreements are authored in Salesforce and sent back. Second, decide the selling unit: each, inner pack, case or pallet, with conversions defined once on the product record rather than in reps' heads. Third, separate on-invoice pricing from trade funds. Allowances that change the invoice belong on the quote; accruals, scan-based promotions and deductions stay in the trade system, linked by account and item for reporting.

ERP

Item master, cost, list price and available inventory flow into Revenue Cloud; approved orders and contracted prices flow back for invoicing, fulfillment and margin reporting.

Trade promotion management

Planned promotions and remaining fund balances by account appear on the quote, so reps do not promise allowances that the trade budget cannot cover.

Product information management

Item attributes, pack configurations, images and sell sheet content stay consistent between the catalog reps quote from and the listings buyers review.

Plan for it

What to get right first.

01

Stay out of consumer pricing

Shelf prices, markdowns and consumer promotions belong in commerce and point-of-sale systems built for high-volume retail transactions. Using Revenue Cloud there adds cost and complexity without benefit. Scope it to negotiated business sales, and state that boundary plainly in the business case so expectations stay realistic.

02

Document reasons for price differences

Charging competing retailers different prices for the same goods can raise questions under the Robinson-Patman Act. Keep a record of why each account's price differs, such as volume or cost-to-serve differences, and have counsel review the pricing policy that your approval rules enforce.

03

Keep deductions with finance

Retailers often short-pay invoices for promotions, damages or compliance fines. Researching and settling those deductions belongs with finance and the trade system. Revenue Cloud contributes clean contract terms that make disputes easier to resolve, but it should not become the place where deduction work happens.

FAQ

Salesforce Revenue Cloud / CPQ for retail & consumer goods: questions.

Is Revenue Cloud a fit for a store-based retailer?

Partly. Revenue Cloud is built for negotiated quotes, contracts and renewals, not for pricing items at the register or online. A retailer with a commercial sales team, a services business or a wholesale channel can use it there. If every sale is a consumer transaction at posted prices, a commerce platform and point-of-sale system are the right tools, and we will tell you so.

How do case packs and units of measure work?

Each product carries its selling units and conversions, so a rep can quote in cases while ERP invoices in eaches, or the reverse. Quantity breaks can apply at the case or pallet level. The important work happens in discovery: agreeing on a single set of conversions with operations and finance before any pricing rules are built on top of them.

Does Revenue Cloud replace trade promotion software?

It can show promotional allowances on a quote and require approval when they exceed policy, but it is not a trade promotion management system. Planning, accruals, post-event analysis and deduction settlement need tools designed for that work. We usually integrate the two so reps see available funds, while the trade system remains the record for promotional spend.

Can the same pricing drive a wholesale ordering portal?

Yes. Contracted prices, bundles and pricing rules defined in Revenue Cloud can drive what a distributor or store owner sees when reordering online through Experience Cloud or a wholesale storefront. That keeps self-service orders and rep-created quotes consistent. We scope the portal after core quoting is stable, since portal pricing errors reach customers directly and are harder to walk back.
