Claude, powered by Anthropic

Claude Code for Engineering Teams consulting

Roll Claude Code out to every developer with managed policy, sandboxing, CI review and spend controls set before the first session. Claude Code, powered by Anthropic, is an agentic coding tool that reads your repository, runs commands and edits files. We help engineering leaders pick the access route, enforce settings centrally, connect it to GitHub and CI, and measure what changes in delivery. The aim is wide adoption without giving an agent more reach than you would give a new engineer.

Claude Code installs in minutes. Governing it across 50 or 500 developers takes a plan.

Any developer can install Claude Code and point it at a repository in a few minutes. That speed is the problem for a CIO. Out of the box, each person decides which account they sign in with, which MCP servers they connect, which commands run without a prompt and whether telemetry ever leaves the laptop. Multiply that by every engineer and you get uneven security, spend nobody can attribute and no way to tell whether the tool helps delivery. A rollout settles those decisions once, at the organization level, in the managed settings tier that individual developers cannot override. Teams keep room to tune their own repositories through committed project settings and CLAUDE.md files.

  1. 01

Pick the access route before you write the policy

Claude Code runs on Claude Team or Enterprise seats, on Claude Console API billing, or through Amazon Bedrock, Google Cloud's Agent Platform or Microsoft Foundry. The route decides more than the invoice. Server-managed settings from the claude.ai admin console reach Team and Enterprise logins, but the docs state the fetch is skipped when a developer exports a cloud-provider variable such as CLAUDE_CODE_USE_BEDROCK, so cloud-routed fleets need policy pushed by MDM or a managed-settings.json file. Contribution analytics and Code Review require a Claude Team or Enterprise organization. Cloud-provider usage never reaches the Anthropic dashboards, so cost attribution there runs through OpenTelemetry or a gateway.

  2. 02

Controls that enforce, and controls that only guide

The documentation is candid that some controls are guidance and some are enforcement. CLAUDE.md is context Claude reads; it blocks nothing. A Bash deny rule matches the command text Claude writes, so a deny on curl does not stop the same program called another way. Server-managed settings are a client-side control that a user on an unmanaged laptop can tamper with. The layers that actually hold are the OS-level sandbox for shell commands, PreToolUse hooks that exit with code 2, managed settings pushed through MDM to protected system paths, and network allowlists locked to admin entries. We design the policy so every risk you care about is covered by at least one layer that enforces.

  3. 03

    Why Abstrakt Solutions

We are a Certified Services Partner in the Claude Partner Network with 12 Claude certifications across the team, and we write the actual artifacts with your platform team: the managed settings file, the hook scripts, the sandbox domain list, the GitHub workflows and the measurement dashboard. Then we hand over a runbook your engineers can maintain without us. Because we have been a Salesforce partner since 2017, we can extend the same rollout to Salesforce DX teams working in Apex, Lightning Web Components and metadata, where a careless deploy reaches customer records quickly and sandbox orgs plus review gates matter more than raw speed. Engagements run at $180 to $225 per hour or as a fixed-fee phase after discovery.

How we help with Claude Code for Engineering Teams (5)

The engagements we run most often on Claude Code for Engineering Teams, from first implementation through optimization.

Access route and seat plan

We compare Team Standard and Premium seats, Enterprise usage-based billing, Console API keys and cloud-provider routes against how your developers actually work. You get a seat-by-seat recommendation and a pilot budget built from your own usage data.

Managed policy package

We draft the managed settings covering login restrictions, permission rules, disabled bypass mode, sandbox, MCP allowlist and telemetry. It ships through Jamf, Intune, your MDM or the claude.ai console, with a test plan that proves each rule is live.

Hooks and sandbox engineering

We write PreToolUse and PostToolUse hooks for secret scanning, protected paths, audit logging and test-output filtering. We tune sandbox filesystem and network allowlists so routine work runs without prompts and risky work does not run at all.

GitHub, CI and review setup

We install the Claude GitHub App or a narrower custom app, wire claude-code-action workflows with workload identity federation where possible, and configure Code Review levels and spend limits per repository. Branch protection and human approval stay the final gate.

Standards, training and measurement

We help each team write a short CLAUDE.md, path-scoped rules and shared skills, then train developers on plan mode, context hygiene and review habits. Analytics and OpenTelemetry put adoption, cost and delivery metrics side by side for leadership.

What Claude Code for Engineering Teams actually includes (6)

Managed settings and precedence

Claude Code reads user, shared project, project local and managed settings, and managed settings win: nothing in a developer's files or a --settings flag overrides a managed key. Delivery options are server-managed settings from Organization settings > Claude Code > Managed settings in claude.ai (Team and Enterprise, Owner or Primary Owner role, fetched at startup and hourly), MDM or registry policies, or a managed-settings.json file. allowManagedPermissionRulesOnly makes managed rules the only permission source, and forceLoginOrgUUID keeps logins inside your organization.

Permission modes and rules

Sessions run in one of six modes: default (labeled Manual), acceptEdits, plan, auto, dontAsk and bypassPermissions. Auto mode has a background classifier check actions and is the starting mode for interactive terminal and VS Code sessions. Rules evaluate deny, then ask, then allow, and a deny in any scope beats an allow in another. Setting permissions.disableBypassPermissionsMode or permissions.disableAutoMode to disable in managed settings removes those modes for everyone.

Hooks

Hooks run your code at defined points, including SessionStart, UserPromptSubmit, PreToolUse, PostToolUse, ConfigChange and Stop. A handler can be a shell command, an HTTP call, an MCP tool call or a single-turn prompt to a Claude model. A PreToolUse hook that exits with code 2 blocks the call even when an allow rule matches. allowManagedHooksOnly blocks user, project and plugin hooks, and allowedHttpHookUrls limits where HTTP hooks may send session data.

Sandboxing

The Bash sandbox uses Seatbelt on macOS and bubblewrap on Linux and WSL2 to restrict what shell commands and their child processes can write and reach. Writes default to the working directory, and network traffic goes through a proxy that checks an allowedDomains list. It is off by default and native Windows runs unsandboxed. Admins can require it with enabled, failIfUnavailable and allowUnsandboxedCommands set to false, and lock domains with allowManagedDomainsOnly. Reads reach most of the disk unless you add denyRead entries.

MCP server control

MCP servers arrive from local, project (.mcp.json) and user scopes, plugins and claude.ai connectors, and project servers need approval in interactive sessions. Admins can deploy a fixed set with managed-mcp.json at a system path, provide remote servers with managedMcpServers, or filter with allowedMcpServers and deniedMcpServers matched by URL or command. allowManagedMcpServersOnly makes the admin allowlist authoritative. The docs warn that a serverName entry is not a security control, because users choose server names.

Review, analytics and spend reporting

Code Review runs multi-agent reviews of GitHub pull requests on Anthropic infrastructure for Team and Enterprise, posts inline findings ranked by severity, and never approves or blocks a merge. /security-review and the Claude Security plugin add on-demand security passes. The claude.ai analytics dashboard shows active users and accept rate and, with the GitHub app, merged PRs containing Claude Code lines; Enterprise adds an Analytics API. OpenTelemetry exports per-user tokens, cost, commits and pull requests on every route.

Is Claude Code for Engineering Teams the right call?

Good fit

  • You have 25 or more developers already trying Claude Code on personal accounts with no shared policy or billing.
  • Security wants proof that agent shell commands cannot read production credentials or reach unapproved hosts before approving wider use.
  • You host code on GitHub and want automated pull request review and @claude workflows with a spend cap per repository.
  • Your company standardizes on Amazon Bedrock, Google Cloud or Microsoft Foundry and needs Claude Code to follow the same IAM and billing path.
  • Leadership is asking whether the tool is worth the money and you need delivery metrics stronger than lines of code.

Think twice

  • Fewer than five developers on one repository: individual seats plus a committed CLAUDE.md and .claude/settings.json usually cover it, with a few hours of advisory time if needed.
  • You want AI help for non-engineers in documents, email and chat: a Claude Enterprise rollout with connectors is the better starting point.
  • You want an AI feature inside your own product for customers: that is an API build, covered by our Custom Claude Agents service.
  • Your Salesforce team needs declarative automation or service agents rather than code: Flow or Agentforce is the better tool.

How a Claude Code for Engineering Teams rollout comes together (5)

  1. 01

    Inventory and route decision

Owners: engineering director and security lead, weeks one and two. We list who already uses Claude Code and how they sign in, which repositories hold regulated or customer data, and your code host and CI. Then we pick the route: Team or Enterprise seats for most companies, Console billing for purely metered use, or a cloud provider when contracts or data-processing terms require it. The output is a written decision, a seat mix and a pilot budget.

  2. 02

    Policy baseline and pilot

Owner: platform team, weeks two to four. We draft managed settings with forceLoginMethod and forceLoginOrgUUID, Read deny rules for .env and secrets paths, bypass mode disabled, sandbox enabled with a starter domain list, an MCP allowlist and telemetry pointed at your collector. Ten to twenty developers across two or three repositories run it for two to three weeks. We log every prompt they found tedious and every block that fired.

  3. 03

    Repository standards

Owners: tech leads. Each pilot team writes a CLAUDE.md under the documented 200-line target with build, test and style commands, moves long workflows into skills and path-scoped .claude/rules files, and commits .claude/settings.json with team allow rules. Hooks that are conventions live in the repository; hooks that are controls live in managed settings. We review the files with each lead so instructions do not contradict each other.

  4. 04

    CI and pull request review

Owner: DevOps. Install the Claude GitHub App at the organization level, or a custom app limited to Contents, Issues and Pull requests. Add claude-code-action workflows using an organization secret or workload identity federation, with --max-turns and workflow timeouts. Turn on Code Review for a few repositories set to Once after PR creation, read the Average cost column after several reviews, then set the monthly Code Review spend limit before expanding.

  5. 05

    Scale and measure

Owners: engineering leadership, monthly. Expand by team, not by individual request. Each month we review spend per user against plan limits or workspace caps, active users and accept rate, merged PRs with Claude Code from contribution metrics, and your own DORA measures: lead time, deployment frequency, change failure rate and time to restore. Policy changes go through code review like any other change, and stalled teams get a working session.

Before you buy licenses. Claude Code is included with Claude Team seats, and claude.com/pricing (checked October 26, 2026) lists Team Standard at $20 per seat per month billed annually and Premium at $100 with five times the usage. Enterprise is listed at $20 per seat plus usage at API rates, 20-seat minimum; on older Enterprise contracts, confirm the seat type includes Claude Code. Console billing is per token through a dedicated Claude Code workspace, while Bedrock, Google Cloud and Foundry bill through your cloud account. Code Review bills separately through usage credits. Confirm terms with Anthropic for your contract. We sell services, not licenses.

Common Claude Code for Engineering Teams mistakes (4)

  1. 01

    Treating CLAUDE.md as a control

CLAUDE.md is context Claude reads, not enforcement. Anything that must never happen belongs in a deny rule, a PreToolUse hook or the sandbox.

  2. 02

Relying on server-managed settings for a cloud-routed fleet

A developer who exports a Bedrock, Vertex or Foundry provider variable or a custom ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL skips the server-managed fetch. Push policy through MDM or managed-settings.json when you route through a cloud provider.

  3. 03

Reviewing every push in every repository

Repositories added to Code Review start at After every push, which multiplies cost by the pushes per pull request. Pilot on Once after PR creation and set the spend limit first.

  4. 04

Counting lines of code as impact

Lines accepted says nothing about defects or rework, and the dashboard skips code a developer substantially rewrote. Pair adoption numbers with lead time, change failure rate and reviewer load.

Guides on Claude Code for Engineering Teams (15)

Claude Code for Engineering Teams questions (6)

Should we buy Claude Team seats or use API billing for Claude Code?

Most companies with up to a few hundred developers start with Team seats, because Claude Code, server-managed settings and the analytics dashboard come with them. Console API billing suits teams that want purely metered spend, per-user monthly spend limits in the Claude Code workspace, or API keys for automation. Heavy Team users can move to Premium seats, which carry five times the Standard usage.

Can we run Claude Code through AWS Bedrock or Google Cloud instead of Anthropic?

Yes. Claude Code supports Amazon Bedrock, Google Cloud's Agent Platform and Microsoft Foundry through environment variables such as CLAUDE_CODE_USE_BEDROCK, and usage bills to your cloud account. That usage does not appear in the Anthropic analytics dashboards and server-managed settings do not apply, so plan on MDM-delivered policy and OpenTelemetry. A self-hosted Claude apps gateway can add SSO sign-in, managed settings and per-user spend limits on those providers.

How do we stop Claude Code from reading secrets or calling unknown hosts?

Layer the controls. Add Read deny rules for .env files and secrets folders, enable the sandbox with denyRead entries for credential directories and a short allowedDomains list, and set allowManagedDomainsOnly so developers cannot widen it. The sandbox credentials setting can also deny or mask specific files and environment variables, such as ~/.aws/credentials or GITHUB_TOKEN, for sandboxed commands.

What does Claude Code cost per developer?

The Claude Code cost documentation reports enterprise deployments averaging about $13 per developer per active day and $150 to $250 per developer per month, with 90 percent of users under $30 per active day. Your number depends on model choice, codebase size and automation. Run a pilot group, measure, then budget.

Does Code Review replace our human reviewers?

No. Code Review posts inline findings ranked by severity plus a check run, but it never approves or blocks a pull request, and the docs say a review with no findings does not mean the code is secure. Keep branch protection and required human approvals, and use the findings to focus reviewer time on the riskiest lines.

Is our code used to train models?

Team, Enterprise and API use fall under the Anthropic Commercial Terms, and the API retention documentation states retained data is never used for model training without your express permission. Zero Data Retention is available for Claude Code with commercial API keys, and Claude Enterprise has a separate Claude Code ZDR offering. Contribution metrics and Code Review are not available with ZDR enabled, so weigh that trade before you turn it on.
