Most Claude security questions already have documented answers. The exposure sits in settings nobody turned on.
Security teams are usually asked a vague question: is Claude safe? The useful questions are narrower. Anthropic's Commercial Terms of Service (effective June 17, 2025) say Anthropic may not train models on Customer Content from the services, and that the customer owns its outputs. That part is settled for Team, Enterprise and API use. What is not settled by default is everything your company controls. On Claude Enterprise, chats and projects are kept indefinitely unless an owner sets a custom retention period. The audit log export reaches back 180 days. Connectors reach whatever the credential behind them can reach. Those defaults are reasonable for a pilot and wrong for most records schedules, so the review has to end in configuration, not a memo.

What the review covers
We work through seven areas and document a decision for each: data use and retention, identity and provisioning, audit and monitoring, network access, connectors and MCP servers, the deployment route (Claude apps, the Claude API, Amazon Bedrock, Google Cloud or Microsoft Foundry) and regulated data such as PHI. Plan choice is part of the security answer. According to claude.com/pricing as of October 26, 2026, the Team plan includes SSO, domain verification and admin controls for connectors, but SCIM, audit logs, the Compliance API, custom data retention, role-based access, inference hooks, IP allowlisting and the HIPAA-ready offering are Enterprise features. If your requirements include any of those, the license decision is made before procurement, not after.
- 02
Where Claude governance usually breaks
The failures we look for are specific and documented by Anthropic itself. A custom connector set up with a fixed API key gives every member that key's access, so a broad key turns a read-only use case into a company-wide data path. Shortening a retention period schedules everything outside the new window for permanent deletion when you save, with no recovery. Resetting SCIM deletes every Claude account except the Primary Owner. Turning on IdP group mappings can demote an admin who is not in a mapped admin group. Enabling HIPAA is one-way from organization settings. None of these are exotic. They happen when settings are changed by one person without a written change plan, which is why the register comes first.

Why Abstrakt Solutions
We have been a Salesforce partner since 2017, and most of that work is access design: profiles, permission sets, sharing rules, field-level security and integration users that see only what they should. Claude governance is the same discipline applied to a new surface, and it matters most when Claude connects to the CRM through Claudeforce or an MCP server. Our team holds 12 Claude certifications, and Abstrakt Solutions is a Certified Services Partner in the Claude Partner Network. This engagement covers company-wide controls for Claude. If you need approval steps inside a regulated workflow, such as a disclosure review or a claims decision, that is our separate Claude compliance automation service.
How we help with Claude Security and Governance (5)
The engagements we run most often on Claude Security and Governance, from first implementation through optimization.
Security questionnaire and vendor review pack
We answer your vendor-risk questionnaire with citations to Anthropic's commercial terms, privacy center, help center and the compliance reports available through trust.anthropic.com. Every answer names its source and date so your reviewers can recheck it.
Identity and access configuration
We set up SSO, domain verification, the restrict-organization-creation toggle, JIT or SCIM provisioning and custom roles mapped to IdP groups. We test the group mappings against a copy of your roster before anyone saves them.
Retention, audit and eDiscovery design
We match Claude retention periods to your records schedule, wire the Compliance API into your SIEM or archive, and decide whether inference hooks belong in front of prompts for DLP. Legal gets a written description of where Claude data lives and how to place a hold.
Connector and MCP risk controls
We review each connector before it is added, set per-tool permissions to Always allow, Needs approval or Blocked by role, and replace shared credentials with narrowly scoped ones. Write tools such as sending email or editing files stay off until a named owner approves them.
AI acceptable-use policy and incident runbook
We draft a short policy that maps each rule to the Claude setting that enforces it, aligned with Anthropic's Usage Policy for high-risk uses. The runbook covers a leaked prompt, a rogue connector, a departing employee and a legal hold.
What Claude Security and Governance actually includes (6)
Commercial data terms and retention controls
Team, Enterprise and API use fall under Anthropic's Commercial Terms, which bar training on Customer Content. On Enterprise, a Primary Owner or Owner can set custom retention under Organization settings > Data and privacy, with a 30-day minimum. Without a setting, data is kept indefinitely. Chats, projects and artifacts have separate periods, and project periods override chat periods for chats inside a project. Some products, including Managed Agents and standalone Claude Code cloud sessions, are outside these controls.
SSO, SCIM provisioning and custom roles
SSO and domain verification run through WorkOS and are available on Team and Enterprise. SCIM is Enterprise only and removes users automatically when they leave the IdP app; JIT never removes members on its own. Custom roles, set under Organization settings > Roles, control capabilities such as Claude Code, Cowork, web search and Claude Security, which models a group may use, and admin rights like Billing or User Management. Roles attach to groups, not individuals.
Audit logs, Compliance API and inference hooks
Owners can export 180 days of audit logs from Organization settings > Data and privacy; the export carries identifiers, not chat content. The Compliance API gives Enterprise programmatic access to the activity feed, users, roles, chats, files, projects and session transcripts, and can permanently delete content with a separately granted scope. Inference hooks send each governed prompt to your own security server for an allow or deny verdict before inference, with shadow mode for testing.
IP allowlisting and connector permissions
Enterprise admins can send CIDR ranges to Anthropic, which applies them so chats, projects and artifacts are reachable only from approved networks. Artifacts shared outside the organization are not restricted unless external sharing is turned off. On Team and Enterprise, only owners (or Enterprise roles with Libraries access) add custom connectors, and custom roles can set each connector or tool to Always allow, Needs approval or Blocked.
HIPAA-ready Enterprise and BAA
Only the Primary Owner can accept the BAA, under Organization settings > Data and privacy > HIPAA Compliance, and the change cannot be reversed from settings. Coverage is feature by feature. Chat, projects, artifacts in chat, web search and research are covered; connectors, Claude in Chrome, skills, cloud sessions and beta products are not. Team, Free, Pro and Max plans cannot enable HIPAA. The Implementation Guide on the trust center lists every feature's status.
Cloud routes: Bedrock, Google Cloud and Foundry
Claude models are also sold through Amazon Bedrock, Claude Models on Google Cloud and Microsoft Foundry. On Bedrock, a data retention mode set by API controls whether requests are retained; Claude Fable 5 and 5.1 require the aws_review mode, with data kept inside AWS. Google offers global, multi-region and regional endpoints, the latter two at a 10 percent premium. Foundry hosted on Azure keeps prompts and completions within Azure. Foundry and Google-managed endpoints do not support the Compliance API.
Is Claude Security and Governance the right call?
Good fit
- Your security team has blocked a Claude rollout until data use, retention and audit questions get written answers with sources.
- Staff already use personal Claude or other AI accounts for work, and you need to move them into a governed Enterprise organization with domain controls.
- You must keep chat records on a defined schedule, respond to eDiscovery, or feed AI activity into a SIEM such as Splunk or Microsoft Sentinel.
- You plan to connect Claude to Salesforce, Microsoft 365, Google Drive or internal systems and need per-tool permissions decided before go-live.
- You are a HIPAA covered entity or business associate and need to know exactly which Claude features may touch PHI under the BAA.
Think twice
- You only need approval checkpoints inside one regulated workflow, such as advisor communications review; our Claude compliance automation service fits better.
- You have fewer than 20 users on a Team plan with no regulated data; the built-in Team admin controls and a one-page policy are usually enough.
- You need a penetration test or SOC 2 audit of your own systems; hire an independent assessor, since we configure and document but do not attest.
- Your AI use runs entirely inside Salesforce Agentforce with no direct Claude access; an Agentforce and Einstein Trust Layer review is the right scope.
How a Claude Security and Governance rollout comes together (5)
- 01
Inventory current AI use and data classes
We list who uses which AI tools today, including personal accounts on company email, and classify the data each team wants to bring to Claude: public, internal, confidential, regulated. We pull your records schedule, current DLP rules and vendor-risk questionnaire. Owners: IT security and legal, with one lead from each pilot department. The output is a one-page data map that drives every later setting, including which teams may connect which systems.
- 02
Choose plan and deployment route
We compare what each requirement needs against the current plan matrix and the cloud routes. Examples: SCIM, audit logs, custom retention and the HIPAA-ready offering require Enterprise; a team building internal apps on its AWS account may be better served through Bedrock with retention locked by a service control policy. We confirm open items with your Anthropic or cloud account team in writing before signature, since contract terms override any help-center summary.
- 03
Configure identity, roles and network
We verify your domains, turn on restrict organization creation, connect SSO and choose JIT or SCIM. Before saving provisioning, we confirm every intended user is assigned to the Anthropic app in your IdP, because unassigned users are deprovisioned on save. We build custom roles per group, set model and capability access, and submit IP ranges for allowlisting, including VPN exit points. Owners: your identity admin and our consultant, working from a change plan.
- 04
Set retention, audit and connector controls
We set chat, project and artifact retention to match the records schedule, export a baseline audit log, and stand up the Compliance API feed to your SIEM or archive with read and delete scopes held by different people. Each connector gets a named business owner, a scoped credential and per-tool permissions by role. If you use inference hooks, we start in shadow mode and review verdicts with security before enforcing them.
- 05
Publish policy, train and rehearse an incident
We publish the acceptable-use policy with a settings register that shows which control enforces each rule, then brief managers on what changes for their teams. We run a tabletop exercise: an employee pastes customer data into the wrong place, or a connector starts returning unexpected content. The exercise tests who pulls the audit trail, who disables the connector and who tells legal. We schedule a quarterly review, since Anthropic ships admin changes often.
Common Claude Security and Governance mistakes (4)
- 01
Treating 'no training' as the whole data answer
The training clause is settled, but retention, deletion, audit and connector reach are not, and Enterprise keeps data indefinitely until someone sets a period.
- 02
Saving provisioning before checking IdP assignments
Users not assigned to the Anthropic app when JIT or SCIM settings are saved get deprovisioned, and admins outside mapped groups can lose rights. Test against a roster export first.
- 03
Adding connectors with one broad shared key
A fixed request header gives every member the same access. Use per-user authentication or a narrowly scoped service credential, and keep write tools off until approved.
- 04
Assuming the BAA covers every feature
Connectors, skills, Claude in Chrome and cloud sessions sit outside BAA coverage. Without a role that blocks them, staff can send PHI through a path the agreement does not cover.

Claude Security and Governance questions (6)
Does Anthropic train its models on our company's Claude data?
Not under commercial terms. Anthropic's Commercial Terms say it may not train models on Customer Content from the services, and claude.com/pricing lists model training as 'None by default' for Team and Enterprise. The exception is if your organization opts in to a program such as the Development Partner Program.
How long does Anthropic keep our Claude Enterprise chats?
Until you set a period. Enterprise data is retained indefinitely unless a Primary Owner or Owner sets custom retention, with a 30-day minimum. When a user deletes a conversation, it leaves their history immediately and backend storage within 30 days. Content flagged for Usage Policy violations can be kept up to 2 years.
What certifications does Anthropic hold?
Anthropic's help center lists ISO 27001:2022, ISO/IEC 42001:2023, SOC 2 Type I and Type II, and a HIPAA-ready configuration with a BAA available. Reports are requested through the trust portal at trust.anthropic.com. We could not confirm a FedRAMP authorization for commercial Claude plans, so ask Anthropic directly if you need one.
Is Claude Security the same thing as securing Claude?
No. Claude Security is a beta product for Enterprise customers that scans code repositories for vulnerabilities and proposes fixes, with findings exportable as CSV or Markdown. It is a tool your security team uses, not a set of controls over Claude itself. We can include its rollout and role permissions in the same engagement.
Should we buy Claude through AWS, Google Cloud or Azure instead?
It depends on who uses it. Cloud routes suit developers building apps under an existing cloud agreement, regional residency needs or committed spend, and Claude Code can run against Bedrock, Google Cloud or Foundry. Admin features for employee chat, such as custom retention, SCIM and the Compliance API, come with a Claude Enterprise plan, and Foundry and Google-managed endpoints do not support the Compliance API.
Can we block employees from sending sensitive data to Claude?
Partly, on Enterprise. Inference hooks send each governed prompt to your security server, which can deny it before inference; images and raw file bytes are not inspected, and prompts cannot be rewritten. Combine hooks with role restrictions, connector permissions and training, since no single control catches everything.
