Claude is only as useful as what it can reach, and only as safe as how it reaches it.
A connector is the link between Claude and an outside system. Under the hood almost every connector is an MCP server: a service that lists the tools it offers, such as search a mailbox or look up an order, and runs them when Claude asks. Claude reaches company systems in three ways. You can add a listed connector from the Connectors directory, add any remote MCP server by its URL as a custom connector, or have a server built for a system that has no connector at all. On Team and Enterprise plans an Owner adds each connector once for the organization, and every member then signs in with their own account.
- 01
Directory connector, custom connector, or a server we build
Start with the directory. Microsoft 365, Google Drive, Gmail, Google Calendar, Slack, Atlassian, Notion, Asana, Box and HubSpot all have listings, and the vendor maintains the server. Use a custom connector when a vendor publishes an MCP endpoint that is not listed, or when you need your own OAuth client in front of it. Build a server when the system is yours: an ERP, a SQL warehouse, a ticketing queue, a pricing engine. That server must be reachable from the egress IP range Anthropic publishes, because Claude connects from the Anthropic cloud, not from the employee's laptop. If it lives inside your network, Enterprise organizations can request access to MCP tunnels, which open an outbound-only connection instead of a public endpoint.
- 02
Where connector projects go wrong
The common failures are predictable. Someone adds a custom connector with an API key in a request header, and every member now acts with that key's access instead of their own. Write tools are switched on during the pilot because they demo well, and nobody reviews which ones Claude may call without asking. Research mode calls connector tools automatically without further approval, so a write-capable tool left enabled can fire during a long research run. The Microsoft 365 connector quietly fails a new feature because the tenant consented before Anthropic added a permission. And the internal server works on the VPN but not in Claude, because traffic from the Anthropic IP range cannot reach it. Each of these is avoidable with a written access design before the first connection.

Why Abstrakt Solutions
We have built Salesforce integrations since 2017, and connector work is integration work with a model on one end. We start with an inventory of systems, owners and data classes, decide per system whether Claude reads, drafts or writes, and test the OAuth flow with your identity team before anyone outside IT sees it. We build custom servers with the official MCP SDKs, put OAuth in front of them rather than shared keys, and log every tool call on the server side. Salesforce-specific MCP work is covered separately on our MCP and Salesforce guide; this service covers everything else Claude needs to reach. Abstrakt is a Certified Services Partner in the Claude Partner Network with 12 Claude certifications on the team.
How we help with Claude Connectors and MCP (5)
The engagements we run most often on Claude Connectors and MCP, from first implementation through optimization.
Connector inventory and access design
We list every system people want Claude to reach, who owns it, what data it holds and whether Claude should read, draft or write there. The output is a one-page access matrix your security team signs before anything is connected.
Microsoft 365, Google Workspace and Slack setup
We work with your Entra or Google admin to grant tenant consent, add the connector for the organization, set tool restrictions and decide whether write actions stay off. Members then connect with their own accounts and see only what their accounts already allow.
Custom MCP servers for internal systems
For ERPs, databases, ticketing and line-of-business apps with no listed connector, we build a remote MCP server with narrow, well-described tools and OAuth sign-in. Read tools ship first; write tools ship only after the read pilot passes review.
Private network access
If a system cannot be exposed to the internet, we either allowlist the egress range Anthropic publishes at your edge or, on Enterprise, help you request and deploy MCP tunnels. Your infrastructure team keeps control of certificates and routes.
Connector governance and logging
We set per-tool permissions, decide which tools may run without approval, and wire server-side logs into your SIEM so every tool call has a user, a time and a result. We also write the runbook for adding the next connector.
What Claude Connectors and MCP actually includes (6)
Connectors directory with organization-level control
The directory lists MCP connectors from Anthropic and third parties, each labeled Verified or Community. Verified means Anthropic tested the tools for quality and policy fit; it is not a security audit. On Team and Enterprise plans, an Owner adds a connector in Organization settings > Connectors, and members then connect their own accounts from Customize > Connectors. On Team plans, members without that permission see a Request button, and Owners approve or dismiss requests from the same settings page.
Microsoft 365 connector
Reaches SharePoint, OneDrive, Outlook and Teams using delegated access, so Claude can read or change only what the signed-in user can. It needs a work or school account on a Microsoft Entra tenant and one-time tenant consent from a Global Administrator. Write actions, such as sending mail, updating SharePoint files and posting Teams messages, are controlled by admins in the connector configuration, with per-tool restrictions and role-based access for specific users in beta.
Google Workspace and Slack connectors
The Google Drive connector is built and run by Google; each person signs in with their own Google account and Claude reads Docs, Sheets, Slides, PDFs and Office files that account can open, but not comments or suggested edits. Gmail and Google Calendar have their own connectors. The Slack connector, on Team and Enterprise plans, searches channels, direct messages and files, and requires the Claude app to be installed in Slack first.
Custom connectors over remote MCP
An Owner can add any remote MCP server by URL. Authentication options are sign in now, sign in when needed, or no sign-in, with a client identity Anthropic hosts (the recommended option), automatic registration, or your own OAuth client. A fixed API key can be sent as a request header, a beta feature that gives every member the key's access. Authentication settings cannot be edited later; you remove and re-add the connector, and members reconnect.
Limits and network rules for servers you host
Claude connects from the Anthropic cloud, and Anthropic documents its outbound range as 160.79.104.0/21. Servers should use the Streamable HTTP transport. On claude.ai and Desktop, a tool result can be about 150,000 characters and a tool call times out after 240 seconds. OAuth discovery, registration and token endpoints get 10 seconds to respond. Resource subscriptions and sampling are not yet supported by Claude, so do not design around them.
MCP tunnels and tool permissions
MCP tunnels, a research preview for Enterprise by request, run two containers in your network that dial out to Anthropic, so internal servers need no inbound firewall rule. Limits include 10 active tunnels per organization and a 90-day server certificate. For every connector, users can set each tool to Always allow, Needs approval or Blocked, and turn connectors on or off per conversation from the + menu.
Is Claude Connectors and MCP the right call?
Good fit
- Your staff already keep contracts, policies and project files in SharePoint or Google Drive, and they want Claude to find and summarize them without uploading copies.
- You run an internal system, such as an ERP, a claims database or a ticketing tool, that people query daily and that has a usable API but no MCP server.
- Your security team will approve AI access only if it uses each employee's own permissions, not a service account that sees everything.
- You have Claude Team or Enterprise seats and adoption has stalled because people keep pasting data in by hand.
- You need a written record of which systems Claude can reach and which actions it can take before audit or legal will sign off.
Think twice
- The goal is a fixed, high-volume process with no person in the loop, such as nightly invoice matching. A scheduled integration or a custom agent on the Claude API fits better; see our custom agents service.
- The data lives mainly in Salesforce. Start with Claudeforce or Salesforce-hosted MCP servers, covered on our Salesforce Claudeforce page and MCP and Salesforce guide.
- Permissions in the source system are already broken, with whole departments able to open payroll folders. Fix access first through a data governance project, or Claude will surface exactly what people should not see.
- Your team uses Microsoft 365 Copilot and has no plan to adopt Claude seats. Our Microsoft Copilot service is the better starting point.
How a Claude Connectors and MCP rollout comes together (5)
- 01
Inventory systems and decide the access level
We meet with IT, security and two or three department leads for a working session. For each requested system we record the owner, the data classes it holds, the identity provider in front of it, and whether Claude should read, draft for human review, or write. Anything holding regulated data gets a named approver. The output is an access matrix and a short list of first connectors, usually one productivity suite and one internal system.
- 02
Set organization controls before anyone connects
An Owner adds only the approved connectors in Organization settings > Connectors. For Microsoft 365, your Entra Global Administrator grants tenant consent and we confirm write actions stay off for the pilot. We set tool permissions so anything that sends, deletes or updates needs approval or is blocked. We also turn off write-capable tools for research use, because research mode calls connector tools without asking.
- 03
Run a read-first pilot with a small group
Ten to twenty people from two departments use the connectors on real work for two to four weeks. They log wrong answers, missing documents and permission surprises in a shared tracker. We review weekly with IT. Most issues at this stage are search quality, such as unindexed SharePoint sites, or permission gaps in the source system that were invisible until Claude found the files.
- 04
Build and secure custom servers
For internal systems we build a remote MCP server with a small set of narrowly named tools, OAuth through your identity provider, and token audience checks as the MCP authorization spec requires. We host it where the Anthropic egress range can reach it, or behind an MCP tunnel. Each tool call is logged with user, tool, arguments and result status, and the logs go to your SIEM before the server opens to the pilot group.
- 05
Turn on writes deliberately and hand over
Once read accuracy is acceptable, we enable specific write tools for specific groups, starting with drafts rather than sends. We document how to add, remove and re-authorize connectors, what to do when a vendor changes its endpoint, and who reviews new connector requests. Your admins run the next connector themselves with our runbook, and we stay available at our hourly rate for anything new.
Common Claude Connectors and MCP mistakes (4)
- 01
Sharing one API key across the company
A request-header credential gives every member the same access. Use OAuth so each person acts as themselves, and keep shared keys for low-risk, read-only services.
- 02
Leaving write tools on during the pilot
Send, delete and update tools make good demos and bad surprises. Block or require approval for them until read accuracy has been reviewed.
- 03
Clicking Always allow on untrusted servers
Anthropic warns that malicious servers can carry hidden instructions. Reserve Always allow for tools you would let run unsupervised, and watch for tool changes after a server updates.
- 04
Assuming the VPN route will work
Claude connects from the Anthropic cloud, not the user's device. Plan the network path, egress allowlist or tunnel, before you build the server.
Guides on Claude Connectors and MCP (3)
Claude Connectors and MCP questions (6)
Can Claude see files a user is not allowed to open?
Not through the Microsoft 365 or Google Drive connectors. Both use the signed-in user's own account, so Claude reaches only what that account can already open. The exception is a custom connector configured with a shared API key, which gives everyone that key's access.
Do we need to build anything to connect SharePoint and Outlook?
Usually no. The Microsoft 365 connector is already in the directory. Your Entra Global Administrator grants tenant consent once, a Claude Owner adds the connector, and members connect their own accounts. The work is deciding which write actions to allow and checking SharePoint permissions first.
How do we connect an on-premises ERP or database?
Wrap it in a remote MCP server with a small set of tools, then make that server reachable by Claude. Either allowlist the egress range Anthropic publishes at your edge, or on Enterprise request MCP tunnels so the server needs no inbound firewall rule. We recommend OAuth on the server either way.
Can we stop employees from adding their own connectors?
On Team and Enterprise plans, members cannot add custom connectors themselves; an Owner, or on Enterprise someone with a custom role that manages libraries, adds them for the organization. Team members can request directory connectors, and Owners approve or dismiss each request.
Are connector tool calls logged?
Plan to log them on your side. Enterprise audit log exports and the Compliance API cover account, chat, file and administrative activity, but we would not rely on them alone for tool-level detail. A custom MCP server should log user, tool, arguments and result for every call, and SaaS systems record delegated actions in their own audit logs.
How long does a connector project take and what does it cost?
A directory connector rollout with access design and a read-first pilot is a short, fixed-scope project. A custom MCP server adds tool design, build, OAuth setup and a security review, so it is quoted separately. We bill $180 to $225 per hour or quote a fixed fee after a short discovery session.
