Optimization · Retail & Consumer Goods

Salesforce optimization for retail and consumer goods.

Retailers and consumer brands often have customer data spread across service, marketing and commerce tools; optimization makes the Salesforce side cleaner, faster and easier to act on.

What optimization looks like for retail & consumer goods

Salesforce optimization for retailers and consumer goods companies improves orgs used for customer service, marketing, wholesale account management or retail execution. We streamline service consoles and case categories, clean up duplicate shopper and account records, review consent across marketing channels, retire unused journeys and automation, and rebuild reports on contact drivers, campaign engagement and key account performance. For brands selling through retailers, we also review how store visits, promotions and orders are tracked, simplifying the tools field reps use during visits.

Why it differs

Why retail & consumer goods is different.

Retail and consumer goods organizations handle large customer volumes with thin margins per interaction. Small inefficiencies in a service console multiply across many contacts, and duplicate shopper records waste marketing spend and create confusing experiences. Seasonal peaks such as holidays and product launches strain both service and marketing operations. Brands selling through retail partners also manage key accounts and field execution, which follow a different rhythm than direct-to-consumer business. Optimization here targets efficiency at volume, reliable consent and identity data, and clarity between direct and wholesale processes. Service and marketing teams also share customer data, so a cleanup in one area immediately benefits the other.

Scope

What the work covers.

Service console efficiency

We study the most frequent case types, such as order status, returns and product questions, and streamline the console around them. Order context from commerce systems appears automatically, macros handle routine replies and case categories are simplified, so agents resolve common requests faster and reports reveal the true reasons customers contact support. Supervisors get queues that show backlog by case type.

Shopper identity and consent cleanup

Customers appear several times through online accounts, loyalty sign-ups and store purchases. We define matching rules, merge or link records where appropriate and consolidate consent and preference data, so marketing respects every opt-out and service agents see one customer rather than several partial profiles. Data Cloud can help with identity resolution at larger volumes. Preference centers are reviewed so customers can update choices themselves, and changes flow to every system that sends messages.

Journey and campaign rationalization

Marketing orgs accumulate journeys, automations and segments that no longer run or that overlap. We inventory active and inactive sends, retire obsolete ones, consolidate overlapping journeys and set naming conventions, reducing the risk of conflicting messages and making the platform easier for a lean team to manage. Marketers also get a documented list of active journeys with owners, audiences and purpose, so new campaigns build on what exists.

Retail execution tuning

For consumer goods brands with field reps, we review visit plans, store audits and order capture on mobile. Unnecessary survey questions are cut, visit templates are simplified and key account reports are rebuilt, so reps spend more time in the store and managers see promotion compliance by retailer and region. Photo capture and shelf checks are organized to feed retailer-level reports.

Approach

How we run it.

We start by mapping customer touchpoints and the systems behind them: commerce, point of sale, loyalty, service and marketing. Interviews with service, marketing, ecommerce and sales teams identify which fixes will pay off first at volume. Changes are tested in sandboxes with realistic data, and consent changes are reviewed by privacy or legal teams. We avoid releases during peak seasons and major launches, prefer gradual rollouts to a subset of agents or segments, and monitor handle times and send errors after each release.

Commerce platform

We confirm that order, return and customer data from the commerce platform appears correctly in service consoles, and fix sync gaps that force agents to switch screens.

Point of sale and loyalty

Store purchases and loyalty status are mapped to the right customer records, reducing duplicate profiles created when in-store and online identities fail to match.

Order management system

Order and fulfillment status shown to agents is checked for accuracy and timeliness, so customers get correct answers on shipping, returns and substitutions.

Plan for it

What to get right first.

01

Consent across channels

Permission to send a promotional text is not permission to email or retarget someone, and several state privacy statutes also let shoppers see or erase what you hold. Store consent consistently and honor it across every tool, and involve privacy counsel in any change to how preferences are captured or synced.

02

Keep card data out of Salesforce

Payment data should remain in PCI DSS compliant payment systems. Review notes, case comments and custom fields for card numbers typed in by agents or customers, remove them and add safeguards that stop the problem from recurring. Train agents on what not to record.

03

Protect peak season

Holiday and launch periods leave little tolerance for disruption. Set a change freeze well ahead of peak, finish training in advance and keep a rollback plan ready for any release that lands close to a high-volume period. Agree on the freeze dates with service and marketing leaders.

FAQ

Optimization for retail & consumer goods: questions.

Our agents juggle several systems for one customer question. Can optimization help?

Yes. We identify the questions asked most, then bring the necessary order, return and loyalty context into the service console, either through existing integrations or by repairing broken ones. Screens are simplified to what agents need for those questions, which reduces switching and shortens conversations without replatforming anything. Agents also get fewer clicks for returns and exchanges.

How do we reduce duplicate customer profiles?

Start by agreeing on identifiers such as email, loyalty number or the customer ID from commerce. We set matching and survivorship rules, merge or link duplicates and block new ones at the entry points that create them. For very large volumes, Data Cloud identity resolution can unify profiles without merging the source records. We start where duplicates hurt most.

Is it worth cleaning up Marketing Cloud before adding personalization?

Generally yes. Personalization depends on accurate profiles, consent and a manageable set of journeys. Cleaning up data extensions, retiring old sends and fixing consent reduces errors and makes new personalization easier to build and test. It also lowers the risk of messaging customers who have opted out. Deliverability usually benefits too, because inactive or unsubscribed contacts stop receiving sends.

Do direct-to-consumer and wholesale teams need separate setups?

Often they share accounts and products but need different processes. We keep shared data such as products and brand hierarchies common, then separate record types, page layouts and reports for wholesale account management and consumer service. Each team avoids the other's clutter, while leadership still gets a combined view of shoppers and retail partners. Permissions follow the same split.
