Finance and accounting teams get the most from Claude, powered by Anthropic, on the work around the numbers: drafting variance commentary, explaining reconciliation differences, answering accounting policy questions, reviewing contracts and invoices, and building or debugging Excel models through Claude for Excel. The ledger, approvals and sign-offs stay where they are. For a SOX-minded team the rule is simple: Claude prepares, a named person reviews, and the workpapers show both.
Which Claude products matter to a finance team?
As of October 2026, four parts of Claude are relevant to corporate finance. Check each against your plan before planning around it.
| Product | What it does for finance | Availability and notes |
|---|---|---|
| Claude for Excel | An add-in that answers questions about open workbooks with cell-level citations, changes assumptions while keeping formula links intact, traces and fixes errors such as #REF! and #DIV/0!, builds or populates models, and handles sorting, filtering, pivot tables, conditional formatting and data validation | Generally available on Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise. Not supported: data tables, macros and VBA. Excel 2016 and 2019 perpetual licenses and Excel on iPad are not supported |
| Claude for Word, PowerPoint and Outlook | Drafts and edits memos and decks, and with cross-app mode can pull figures from an open Excel model into a slide or memo | Installed from Microsoft AppSource. Cross-app mode needs a paid plan, is off by default on Team and Enterprise, and owners control it under Organization settings, Office agents |
| Claude apps with Projects and Skills | Holds policy manuals and close checklists as project knowledge; Skills package repeat formats such as your variance commentary template | Team and Enterprise for organization-wide Skills |
| Connectors | Bring outside context in, such as market data from S&P Global, LSEG or Daloopa in Excel, or internal systems through custom MCP connectors | Directory connectors depend on vendor availability; ERP access usually means a vendor or custom MCP server |
Anthropic also markets Claude for Financial Services to banks, insurers, asset managers and fintech firms, with agent templates for work such as credit memos, KYC screening and fund accounting. It is aimed at those industries more than at a corporate controller's team, but its connectors and Excel focus show where the product is heading.
What are realistic uses in finance and accounting?
| Use case | What Claude does | Inputs it needs | Human control |
|---|---|---|---|
| Variance commentary | Drafts budget-to-actual or period-over-period explanations per cost center from the flux file and prior commentary | Flux workbook, thresholds, prior-period commentary, notes from budget owners | Owner confirms each driver; controller approves final commentary |
| Reconciliation support | Explains differences, groups reconciling items, suggests likely matches and drafts reconciliation notes | Exported subledger and bank or GL detail in Excel | Preparer clears items in the reconciliation tool; reviewer signs off as today |
| Accounting policy Q&A | Answers questions from the policy manual and memos, citing the section | Policy manual and technical memos loaded to a project | Technical accounting owns answers that affect recognition or disclosure |
| Contract review | Flags terms that affect revenue or lease accounting, such as variable consideration, termination rights or embedded leases | Executed contract PDFs, your review checklist as a Skill | Revenue or lease accountant concludes; Claude's flags become a checklist input |
| Invoice and AP exceptions | Summarizes mismatches between invoice, PO and receipt and drafts vendor questions | Exception reports, invoice images, PO data | AP clerk decides; approvals stay in the AP system |
| Model work in Excel | Traces how a figure is built, finds broken links, flexes assumptions and documents a model | Trusted copy of the workbook | Model owner reviews every change; key outputs tied out |
| Board and management reporting | Turns approved numbers into deck pages and memo drafts | Final, approved figures | FP&A lead checks every number against the source |
| Audit requests | Organizes support for auditor requests and drafts walkthrough narratives | Request list, existing narratives and evidence | Controller reviews before anything goes to auditors |
What does a controlled workflow look like? A variance commentary example
- Build the input. The analyst runs the standard flux report and saves it as the period's workbook. Claude does not pull numbers from the ERP for this step, so the source is the same report you use today.
- Apply the template. A Skill holds the commentary format, materiality thresholds and wording rules, for example 'state the driver, the amount and whether it recurs.' Because the Skill is a file, it can be versioned and reviewed like any other procedure.
- Draft. In Claude for Excel, the analyst asks for commentary on every line above threshold. Answers carry cell-level citations, so each sentence can be traced to the cell it describes.
- Confirm drivers. Budget owners confirm or correct the stated drivers. Claude can draft those questions, but the answers come from people.
- Review and approve. The controller reviews the final commentary against the flux file and signs off in the usual place. The reviewer's sign-off is the control, not the draft.
- Keep evidence. Save the final commentary, the flux file and the review sign-off in the close folder. Do not rely on the add-in's chat history as evidence, for reasons explained below.
How should SOX-minded teams think about controls?
Claude is a tool used inside a process, not a control by itself. If a Claude-drafted output feeds a key control, such as a reconciliation review or a flux review, the control is still the documented review by a qualified person, and that review must be precise enough to catch an error Claude could make. Update the control narrative to say where AI assistance is used and what the reviewer checks. Discuss the change with your external auditors before the period it starts, not after.
Several product facts matter for evidence and IT general controls. Anthropic documents that Claude for Excel chat history is stored locally in the browser, is not stored on Anthropic servers or synced across devices, and can be cleared by the user. Add-in activity is not included in Enterprise audit logs, and the add-in does not inherit custom data retention settings. For Enterprise organizations with the Compliance API enabled, add-in sessions are included, with that coverage in public beta. Inputs and outputs are deleted on the backend within 30 days, with exceptions in Anthropic's retention policy. The practical result: keep your evidence in your workpapers, not in Claude.
| Concern | What to do | Relevant Claude feature or limit |
|---|---|---|
| Who can use Claude on financial data | Provision through SSO; on Enterprise, SCIM and a finance custom role | SSO on Team and Enterprise; SCIM and custom roles on Enterprise |
| Changes to recurring prompts and templates | Keep Skills used in close or reporting in version control with an owner and change review | Organization-provisioned Skills; on Enterprise, group targeting through plugins |
| Unintended changes to workbooks | Work on a trusted copy; review every change before saving the controlled version | Overwrite protection warns before overwriting data; risky operations ask for confirmation |
| Malicious content in outside files | Do not run Claude on vendor templates or downloaded files inside sensitive workbooks | Anthropic warns external files can contain hidden instructions that manipulate the add-in |
| Calculation accuracy | Keep calculations as Excel formulas you can inspect; tie out key outputs | Anthropic does not recommend the add-in for audit-critical calculations without verification |
| Evidence and retention | Store final outputs and sign-offs in the close folder | Add-in chat history is local; not in Enterprise audit logs; Compliance API coverage in public beta |
| Which models users can select | Set allowed models for the finance role | Enterprise model access settings also apply in the add-ins |
What does IT need to know to deploy Claude for Excel to finance?
Deployment is a Microsoft 365 admin task, and a few details trip teams up. Anthropic's deployment steps are: turn on 'Let users access the Office Store' under Org settings, open Settings, Integrated apps, Add-ins, search for Claude for Microsoft 365, and assign it to the finance group rather than the whole tenant. Where Office Store access must stay off, deploy with the custom manifest XML file instead. Anthropic also notes a known Microsoft issue: if admin roles are activated through Entra Privileged Identity Management, the Integrated apps page does not recognize them and deployment fails, so deploy from an account with the role assigned as permanently active.
- Supported versions: Excel on the web, Excel on Windows with a Microsoft 365 subscription at build 16.0.13127.20296 or later, and Excel on Mac 16.46 or later. Perpetual-license Excel 2016 and 2019 will not run it, so check for finance users still on those versions.
- Third-party platforms: if your company routes AI traffic through Amazon Bedrock, Google Cloud Vertex AI, Azure AI Foundry or an LLM gateway, the add-in can be deployed without individual Claude accounts, with models coming from that platform. Cross-app work across Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Outlook is not supported on those routes.
- Standing instructions: each user can set persistent Instructions in the add-in, such as number formats or currency conventions. They apply only in Excel, so put shared team rules in a Skill instead, where they can be reviewed and versioned.
- Long sessions: the add-in automatically compacts longer conversations into new ones to avoid running out of context. Restate key assumptions when you return to a model after a long session.
What should finance teams not use Claude for?
- Posting journal entries or approving payments without a person. Keep posting and approval rights in the ERP and AP system. Anthropic's directory does not accept connectors that transfer money.
- Final figures that have not been tied out to the ledger or a controlled report.
- Arithmetic done in chat instead of in the workbook. Ask Claude to write the formula so the calculation stays visible and auditable.
- Macros, VBA and Excel data tables, which Claude for Excel does not support.
- Credit, pricing or collections decisions about individual people without human review. Anthropic's Usage Policy treats finance and credit recommendations about individuals as high-risk and requires qualified human review and disclosure; internal analysis that is not the final recommendation is excluded.
How should a finance team get started?
- Pick two workflows with high volume and low judgment, such as variance commentary drafts and reconciliation notes, and measure how long they take today.
- Deploy Claude for Excel through the Microsoft 365 Admin Center to the finance group only. Admins can also deploy with a manifest file where Office Store access is turned off.
- Write one Skill per workflow with your format, thresholds and wording rules, and keep it under change control.
- Update the affected control narratives and walk them through with internal audit.
- Train the team on review duties and on prompt injection from outside files before access opens.
- Measure again after a month or two of use and decide whether to widen the scope.
Questions people also ask
Is Claude for Excel available on Team and Enterprise plans?
Yes. As of October 2026 Anthropic lists Claude for Excel as generally available on Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise plans. Admins deploy it through the Microsoft 365 Admin Center or with a manifest file, and it runs on Excel on the web, current Microsoft 365 Excel on Windows and Excel on Mac.
Can Claude for Excel be used in SOX-relevant work?
It can support the work, but it does not replace the control. Keep the reviewer's documented sign-off as the control, store evidence in your workpapers rather than in the add-in's local chat history, and discuss the process change with your auditors. Anthropic itself does not recommend the add-in for audit-critical calculations without verification.
Does Claude for Excel activity show up in audit logs?
Not in Enterprise audit logs. For Enterprise organizations with the Compliance API enabled, Claude for Excel sessions are included, and Anthropic describes that coverage as public beta. The add-in also does not inherit custom data retention settings.
Can Claude connect directly to NetSuite, SAP or another ERP?
Only through an MCP connector, either one the ERP vendor publishes or a custom server. Check the Anthropic Directory for your system, then scope access to read-only and to the data the finance role already sees. Do not grant posting or payment rights through an AI connector.
What is Claude for Financial Services?
It is Anthropic's offering for banks, insurers, asset and wealth managers and fintech firms, combining Claude apps, connectors to market data providers such as LSEG, FactSet, S&P Global and Morningstar, and agent templates for work such as credit memos and KYC screening. Corporate finance teams use the same underlying products, mainly Claude for Excel and the Microsoft 365 add-ins.
